Named for Nebraska's Sand Hills, an important stopover area during migration, these birds weigh about ten pounds and have a wingspan of six feet. They frequently give a loud trumpeting call and can be heard from a long distance. Sandhill cranes breed in the northern USA and Canada and journey to America's Southwest and Texas each winter.
