The caribou, called "reighdeer" in Europe, is a species of deer native to Arctic tundra and northern boreal forests. These ruminates (grazing animals with a four-chamber stomach) have specialiced bacteria that allow them to eat and digest the lichen growing on Arctic rocks. Unlike other deer, both males and females grow antlers. An efficient heat exchange system keeps legs cool and core body temperature warm for living in cold northern lands. Adult caribou lose about a quart of blood to biting insects every week they spend in the tundra during the season.
